Manchester United were made to work very hard for their 1-0 win against FC Copenhagen in Cologne as they booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals.

Despite 14 shots on target against Copenhagen’s goalkeeper, Karl-Johan Johnsson, Manchester United needed extra-time to get past their Danish opponents, with Bruno Fernandes getting the winner via penalty.

The Portuguese expertly tucked away a penalty in the first period of extra-time after Anthony Martial was hauled down by Andreas Bjelland.

It was Manchester United’s 21st penalty of the season and the seventh Fernandes has bagged since joining from Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window. No team in Europe’s top five leagues have more.

The result means there could be an all-English semi-final tie next Monday, but that will only happen if Wolves can get past Sevilla on Tuesday.
